The Electric Boogie: Freightliner Re-Union

11:30PM

Freightliner Reunion PosterThe reunion of these five Fredericton-bred musicians might be better described as the continuation of a collaboration that began in the seventies.

Originally billed as Vince Packard and the Freightliners, Tom Blizzard (drums), Peter Palmer (bass and vocal), David Palmer (guitar and pedal steel) and Rollie Waddingham (lead vocal), all veterans of the Fredericton rock scene, got into country and began playing local taverns, initially employing Cedric Bidlake (steel) before recruiting Stewart MacDougall (keyboards and vocal) as the fifth piece. The “Freightliner” incarnation with vocalist Ted Tweedie was still well down the road.

Tom, Pete, Dave, Rollie  and Stew  had the longest run, packing ‘em in with a set list  that veered from Frank Zappa to Merle Haggard and back to Little Feat, and have remained committed to the vocation that first brought them together over thirty years ago.

Big wheels rollin’. Movin’ on.

Festival Place, Sherwood Park, AB
Tickets:Festival Place Box Office 780-449-3378
              TicketMaster 780-451-8000

On November 14, 2003 I celebrated the release of   Ghost Trains - All of the Songs and Some of the Story with a live performance at Festival Place  in Sherwood Park, Alberta.

In it's usual incarnation as a stage play, Mansel Robinson's ode to romance and the Canadian  railroad is  delivered  by his character Dougie McCrea, the narrative punctuated with his blank verse and eight songs co-written with me. This multi media adaptation for cabaret  presents  the song cycle in concert with poetic vignettes from the spoken text (all performed by  yours truly), a life size backdrop of  photograpic railscapes by Tim Lee and  audio montages by Colin Lay. The band features Ron Rault (bass and vocal), Mark Sterling (guitar, harmonica, keyboard and vocal), Scott Anderson (drums) and Gary Koliger (guitar). The entire cast and crew  returns to Festival Place October 6, 2005 for an encore performance.

On February 24, 2005, The Full Moon Folk Club presented Tom Phillips and Friends in a tribute to Merle Haggard. It was my great pleasure to be included in the evening, and not only because I'm a major Merle fan. In addition to Tom,  the cast included Steve Pineo, Kit Johnson and Charlie Vaullieux so it was a perfect opportunity to work with some of my favourite Calgary cats and catch up with some good friends while playing and singing some of my all time favourite songs. Hope we get to do this again.

Scott Sandeman - Allen got some great shots of the proceedings which you can check out with this link

EDMONTON JOURNAL  Tuesday November 30, 2004

'Homegrown acts' flourish in the glow of Ruby Moon

Dowey, Phillips among those recording for roots label

by Peter North

Judging by its first two releases, Ruby Moon Records appears to be a fine new addition to the Alberta roots music scene.

Operating from Calgary, the indie label has come out of the gate with albums from two musicians who've been longtime regional favourites of blues and country fans.

Look On Yonder Wall, an early November release by bluesman Bill Dowey and his band The Blues Devils, was followed last week by another live set from Tom Phillips, one of southern Alberta's honky-tonk heroes.

While Dowey's set of blues staples was cut in the tavern of Calgary's King Eddy Hotel, Phillips' 16-song effort was captured during a two-night stand at the Ironwood Stage and Grill.

"It’s a good thing we scheduled Bill's recording dates when we did because the King Eddy closed down not that long afterward," Ruby Moon representative Shannon Anderson says of the tattered venue that had been a pit stop for touring and local blues groups since the mid-'80s.

"The vision of the Ruby Moon is to concentrate on homegrown acts and the live recordings are part of what we're calling the Wee Hrs. series," added Anderson, who expects Dowey to play a multiple-night engagement in Edmonton early next year.

Phillips' Ruby Moon release, King of the Broken Heart, is a step up from his last studio offering High Flyer that was a disappointment on the production front and surprisingly thin in the vocal department.

Produced by respected bluesman Tim Williams, as was the Downey disc, King of the Broken Heart combines nine Phillips originals with six rough-and-rowdy covers of some of his heroes - Mel Tillis, Ian Tyson and Merle Haggard.

Last week, Williams was in a Calgary studio control room recording material for yet another Ruby Moon project. This one matched Phillips with Billy Cowsiill and Edmonton's Stewart MacDougall as they covered a dozen Hank Williams songs.

"We also cut an equal number of originals for what is going to be a two-CD set," an enthusiastic MacDougall said following his sessions.

"The band, which included Tim Leacock from the Co-Dependents, Ian Tyson's old drummer Thom Moon and steel player Charlie Veilleux, really clicked."

The pianist / singer was thrilled that Cowsill, his longtime friend and some time writing partner, was able to participate in the sessions.

Cowsill's numerous health problems had basically kept him out of circulation for the better part of a year. It remains to be seen if the man who provided the vocal swagger and sweet harmonies in groups like The Blue Shadows and The Co-Dependents will ever be able to make more than the occasional guest appearance in a nightclub or concert setting.

While the release of a second live Co Dependents disc has been rumoured, a spirited and vintage live set featuring Cowsill will definitely be issued in time for Christmas by Calgary’s Indelible Records. The eight-song EP was recorded at the Palliser Hotel during the 1985 Calgary Stampede when a very young Colin James was working with Cowsill. It will be available at Megatunes by mid- December.

Peter North arranged this meeting with Randy Travis before his concert at Rexall Place in Edmonton last October (2003). Back in the early 90's, Mr. Travis recorded a couple of songs I wrote with Dave Wilkie. Ten years later I was finally able to thank him properly.

If you've been watching this page for news of  the "Billy & Stew Show" aka  " If Memory Serves Me" read on.
2003 was a tough year for Bill. He spent a considerable part of it in hospital, undergoing hip replacement surgery in October and spinal fusion in December.  He's recouperating at home now, doing what will probably be a long program of physical therapy. We're not sure when he'll be able to return to work.  On Sunday March 21, 2004 the Ironwood Stage in Calgary hosted a concert  for his benefit  featuring  many of his friends, family and colleagues, including Travis Cowsill, John Cowsill, Lindsay Mitchell, Chris Nordquist, Colin James, Danny Casavant, Steve Pineo, Tim Leacock, Kit Johnson, Ross Watson, Ralph Johnson, Mark Sadlier-Brown, Tom Phillips, Mike Stack, and yours truly. It was a great night. Here we are (before all the trouble started) at the Ironwood in May  2003.

The Gift
The Gift, a tribute concert conceived and produced by Peter North and directed by Stewart MacDougall, honours the music and words of Ian Tyson with interpretations by MacDougall, Jeff Bradshaw, Kenny Chalmers, Ron Rault, Tom Wilson, Lionel Rault, Doug Andrew (Circus in Flames), Shuyler Jansen (Old Reliable), Corb Lund and The McDades. The show debuted in Alberta in January of 2002 playing to sold out houses at Festival Place in Sherwood Park and The Arden Theatre in St . Albert. In September ot the same year, a performance presented by CKUA Radio at the Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary  included Tom Phillips and featured special guests Cindy Church and  Ramblin' Jack Elliott . Ian himself was in attendance that evening and joined the cast for the finale.  Cindy Church remained with the company for the return engagement at The Arden  the following night . The original cast also included the  Edmonton Bluegrass group Maple Creek.  In April 2005 The Gift returned to Festival Place for a one night stand before travelling to Ottawa for the Alberta Scene Festival. This edition of the show included  P. J. Perry at Festival Place and Laura Vinson at both performances, which were once again well attended and enthusiastically received. Mr. Tyson turned up again at the Ottawa performance, this time with the Gords (Gord Matthews and Gord Maxwell) in tow; his surprise rendition of  This Is My Sky was naturally the highlight of the night.  Producer Peter North, a long time Tyson fan and friend, describes his inspiration for  "The Gift " like this.  "It just seemed right to honour one of the greatest songwriters of our time, who just happens to be one of our own. We've brought together artists who had not only been influenced by the various frameworks Ian has worked in, but  those who could also put their own unique spins on these songs that continue to stand the test of time."

Hangin' With Hank
The year 2003 marks the 50th Anniversary of the untimely death of Hank Williams Sr. On New Years Day 1953 the legendary Country & Western singer/songwriter died  while travelling from Montgomery, Alabama to a concert in Canton, Ohio. He was twenty-nine.

In commemoration of the occasion and the Williams legacy,  Peter North, in conjunction with Ramparts Entertainment, presents Hangin'  With Hank: A Tribute to the Songwriting of Hank Williams. This production by the team that created The Gift: Honouring the Music and Words of Ian Tyson features Mark Sterling, Stewart MacDougall, Ron Rault, Lionel Rault, Danny Mack, Doug Andrew, Dawn Oviatt, Debbie Boodram and The Bomba Trio adapting Williams songs to their particular styles, genres which span Bluegrass, Folk, Blues, R&B, Latin and Jazz.
